Is NEMT right for you or your loved one?

Wheelchair Express Sioux Falls provides what is known as nonemergency medical transportation (NEMT). NEMT companies can provide transportation to people with a wide variety of mobility issues. We have had several questions about this type of service recently, so here is an explanation of how NEMT differs from other types of service.
To begin, despite its name nonemergency medical transport providers do NOT provide medical care (the name refers to the fact that most of our trips take people to and from medical facilities). Medical care during transport is provided by ambulance services, including on a nonemergency basis. That is, a nonemergency ambulance will have staff and equipment that can provide basic life support services, even if the patient is not in an immediately life-threatening condition. Ambulance services only transport people via stretcher (also called gurney or cot). We also do stretcher transports–our equipment is regularly inspected by qualified technicians–but because we do not provide medical services our prices are much lower than a ride in an ambulance.
On the other end of the spectrum, we also provide the same transportation services as municipal paratransit (also known as the city bus) or even taxi services: for a wide range of mobility issues, from people who walk to those who use wheelchairs and other mobility devices. The key difference between us and paratransit/taxi is the level of service. Bus and taxi drivers provide what is called “curb-to-curb” service, which means the passenger needs to be able to meet the vehicle on the curb and make it to their appointment after being dropped off at the front door. In contrast, we provide “door-through-door” service. We can come into a nursing home or apartment, help you or your loved one with minor tasks such as putting on a coat, and make sure that our passenger is checked in at the correct clinic.
So, when looking for the best form of transportation for you or your loved one, keep in mind that Wheelchair Express Sioux Falls can provide a higher level of service than a bus or taxi company, at a lower price than an ambulance service.
